Thank you, from Karen and Amber

July 15, 2018

Back in May you would have received a letter from us about one of our young mums, Karen, who bravely shared her inspiring story. Karen unexpectedly fell pregnant at the age of 16 and battled many obstacles to rebuild her life for the sake of her baby, Amber. Working closely with our HOPE program, she fought a heavy drug addiction, moved into safe temporary accommodation and set up a loving home.

In June we received communication from a very kind donor who was moved by Karen’s story and inspired by the work of the HOPE program. He wanted to give more than just a single donation and offered a gift to match donations given to the HOPE appeal. Thanks to your fantastic response, we have raised more than $50,000 for the program so far.

Since we wrote to you last, Karen has secured permanent accommodation close to her parents of whom she now has a strong relationship. When we met Karen her relationships with friends and family were broken, but after rebuilding her life these relationships have returned stronger than ever. Such a great result will give Amber a supportive family unit and ideal examples of healthy relationships for her to build and model her own future.

This is the ultimate aim of the HOPE program. To ensure the children and babies of our young parents are given every opportunity to thrive and break the cycle of intergenerational disadvantage because no child deserves to be born into poverty, neglect or abuse.

Karen is now reaching the end of her time with the program, and no longer needs intensive support. She asked if she could pass on a personal message to you all…

“The HOPE program has given me and Amber so much so I was more than happy to share our story to help raise funds for the program. I want to say thank you to everyone who donated to this appeal, I want them to know their donations really will change the lives of young mums and
dads who need help to give their babies a good life, like me. I know how much this really means, so thank you.”

Your donations will go towards expanding the program to include young disadvantaged fathers through peer support groups, individual case management support and tailored parenting education focussed on the needs of young dads. The ability to provide a holistic service for both mother and father will ultimately give babies the best possible start in life and help break the cycle of intergenerational disadvantage.

If you haven’t had a chance to donate to the HOPE appeal, it’s not too late. Please visit catholiccare.org to make a gift of HOPE to young disadvantaged families in need.
